Chapter Eight

By the time Caleb pulled into the Leadbetters’ driveway, his stomach was roiling, and he only wished he could blame it on last night’s beer.

Alex hadn’t said anything to him on the way over, which was a small blessing. He’d already let his dick get the better of him and said more than he’d wanted at her place. He’d let her know he wanted to sleep with her, which was an asshole thing to do considering why he was here. And to her credit, she had enough composure to keep focused on his mission and prevent him from making another possible mistake.

In other words, she was being the ideal wingman.

Worse, he knew he was hurting her, despite her attempts to hide it from him. He’d seen it in the way her mouth angled down and the pinch in the corners of her eyes. But he owed it to himself and to her to find out what had happened while he was gone. Once the facts were clear, then he could move forward.

Alex hopped out of the car as soon as he threw it in park and went straight for the front door. He managed to catch up just as she reached the foyer and Kourtney appeared from the doorway of the other room.

“You’re late,” she said, her eyes narrowed. Then Kourtney saw him, and her expression did a one-eighty into shock. “What’s he doing here?”

“He came to help out.” Alex took his hand and led him to the same room he’d run into on Sunday. Only now, instead of being filled with Kourtney’s future in-laws, it was packed with bridesmaids, all of whom stared at them as they entered. Alex appeared to ignore them and went for one of the boxes of wedding favors. “What do you need us to do?”

“I need you to start filling the bags with Jordan almonds, and I need him to leave. Now.”

He’d always known Kourtney liked to be in control, but she was taking things to a whole new level of bitchiness. “I’ll just hold the bags while Alex fills them.”

The glare she shot at him contained only half the fury of the one she directed toward Alex. Her nostrils flared and she curled her fingers so her painted nails looked more like claws.

An overwhelming urge to protect Alex took over, and he moved between the two sisters. “Relax, Kourtney. We’re not here to make any trouble.”

Her mouth opened and closed a few times before she spun around in her high heels and retreated to the furthest corner from them.

“That went well,” Alex murmured as she pulled a box of pastel coated almonds down from the stack. “Give her a couple of minutes to cool down.”

“And then?”

Alex gave him a conspiratorial wink. “Then you can fetch me a Coke from the fridge, maybe even help yourself to some of the sandwiches I know are in the kitchen.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

And as he held open the little pink bag for her to scoop the almonds into, he realized that Alex had been right about everything.
